The minute I heard about “social distancing” guidelines, something within me shouted: “NO!” If you felt the same thing, it may be because of what I am about to share with you.
The word “social” is defined by Dictionary.com as follows:
1. relating to, devoted to, or characterized by friendly companionship or relations: a social club.
2. seeking or enjoying the companionship of others; friendly; sociable; gregarious.
I am a social person! I miss my meeting with my various communities! I miss my friends, extended family, spiritual community, volunteering, and attending social get-togethers.
I thought: I would go totally wiggy if I had that totally taken away from me!
How I Totally Transformed My Resistance—
and How You Can, Too
This is what is working for me:
- Reframing: I “flipped” the way I thought about it. I am merely PHYSICAL distancing—not distancing “friendly companionship or relations.”
- Actively connecting with people: via phone, text, video message, video conferencing
- Virtual “theme” parties and gatherings: tea parties, coffee dates, happy hour, brunches, dinner parties
- Offering emotional and spiritual support: to those that are living alone, geographically separated from their loved ones, or share that they are stressed and particularly challenged at this time
- Posting positive and supportive messaging on my social media pages: sharing quotes that I have been inspired to write, writing and posting blogs, and so on.
Taking supportive action steps, like what I shared above, made me realize that there is a difference between social distancing and physical distancing. I am choosing to physically distance while remaining heart-connected with others.
