Going Within (Part IV): How to Meditate—Try This!
In previous blogs, I explored what going within / meditation means, what meditation is and is not, and how meditation is both a mind-less-ness and mind-full-ness practice. Within this blog, I will offer some tips for staying aware and consciously connected to your inner environment and getting the maximum benefit from your going within/meditation experiences.
After you find a quiet and comfortable place to sit, turn off all electronic devices and distractions, then
- Consciously state your intention to go within
- Quiet your thinking mind.
- Tune-in to the rhythm of your heartbeat or focus on the rise and fall of your chest, while inhaling and exhaling slowly and deeply.
- If your attention wanders and your thinking mind begins to engage, be gentle with yourself and simply return to the stillness within.
- Inhale and exhale more deep breaths.
- To focus and center within, silently state a simple one-word mantra repeatedly. Try some of the examples below:
- Love… Love… Love…
- You can also state a one-word mantra with each inhaled breath, then again with each exhaled breath.
- An example: Say with each inhaled breath: Thank you.
- With each exhaled breath: I Am grateful.
- Be open to responses that take the form of ideas, impressions, sensations, colors, sounds—the various multisensory ways your Inner Knowing/God Within can reveal Itself to you.
- Have a journal and pen handy to notate any impactful impressions, images, and so on
Optional: At the beginning of the meditation, you can state your intention to receive Inner Knowing about a specific topic. You can also ask a question, request guidance, information, support, and/or inspiration. Here are some examples:
- What is God’s True Nature?
- How can I become more ________? (Fill-in whatever it is you would like to experience.)
Remember, meditation is a practice—and requires practice. I make it a habit to meditate on a regular basis even if for just a few minutes once or twice each day. Because of this, my body and my psyche have actually started to crave the experience of meditating. I feel a bit “off” if I do not take a few moments to simply attune inwardly and be still. The more I meditate, the more I want to meditate.
Affirmations
- The more I meditate, the more I want to meditate.
- While meditating, I Am relaxing my body, relaxing my thinking mind, and connecting to/with my deep Inner Knowing.
And so it is.
You’ve got this!
